The Ramen Bar

November 17, 2015 by greysuitcase in Food, Travel

I had the chance to visit The Ramen Bar during one of my trips to San Francisco. Located in the heart of downtown San Francisco, this place is a collaboration between chef Ken Tominaga and chef Michael Mina. Blending the California cooking philosophy with Japanese techniques and ingredients, their menus definitely taste different than the traditional Japanese dishes. I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen and Sesame Salmon Donburi. My ramen's broth was a little bit too salty for my taste. The donburi was really nice tho. I really liked the flavors and the texture of the whole dish, and the crispy salmon skin was cooked just right. They also have selections of pastries, desserts, and beverages that you can choose from if you need something sweet or refreshing to finish off your meal.

Welcoming Fall

November 10, 2015 by greysuitcase in Seoul, South Korea, Weekend

When the summer heat has finally left the city and you constantly hearing the crisp sounds of those stepped on fall leaves on the pavements, you'll realize that fall is finally here (that and the time it takes you to get out of the house became longer cos you have to put on layers now :P). Seeing the leaves changing colors in Seoul is one of my favorite moments that I think I'll be always looking forward to. I've been to Olympic park (올림픽공원) in spring before and I can definitely say that coming to this place in Fall is like visiting a whole different place. The moment I arrived on this street, I was amazed by the colors of the lined ginko trees (은행 나무) that are neatly standing on both sides of the sidewalk. Maybe it's the change of scenery, or maybe I've just never lived in a city where I can enjoy as much fall foliage, but this view was quite something to me. All I wanna do was just threw a blanket, have a picnic with some friends right in the middle of this side walk, and enjoy this view. Maybe for my next visit ;)

p.s: things have been pretty crazy this past few weeks (and still are), so I'll try my best to post new posts. bear with me :)

Timothy & Jennifer Winter Session

October 26, 2015 by greysuitcase in Engagement Shoot, Portraits

Last winter, I had the pleasure of shooting my sister and her fiancé during my visit to the bay area. Timmy & Jenni met at our church fellowship in San Francisco and started dating after about a year of getting to know each other. I’ve known Jenni since she was still a baby (obviously) and Timmy since he was still in high school. I still vividly remember the times I used to fight with Jenni about who should do the laundry or clean up the room when we were living together in Perth and my first year’s impression of Timmy, the high-spirited, highly-energized, and super competitive boy who’s always excited about playing any kinds of games and an expert at teasing people and being silly. I watched them grew up from being two innocent silly kids into two adults who have a mature relationship. After 7 years of dating—in which 5 long years of them were long-distanced relationship I should add (bravo!)—these two are finally getting hitched next month. I don’t think I’ve known anybody personally who have been in a relationship longer than these two and I can’t believe they are actually getting married!

Since we are spreading the news about their wedding, here’s a sneak peek to some of their engagement pictures. I’ll be posting more images in the near future when we are getting close to the wedding day. But for now, good luck with the wedding preparation you two! Couldn’t be happier for both of you :)

p.s: click on portrait shots to view the fit on screen version of it.

A little BTS story:
We actually had a family vacation at Lake Tahoe during that time and decided to do a short session while we were there. The weather was really nice. Snow was everywhere and we had a fun (somewhat freezing) shoot at the snow park. The other session was shot on another day when we got back to the bay area. The wind was blowing like crazy that day, but I think we managed to get some good shots of two of them at the Golden Gate Park.

La Lune Violette

October 10, 2015 by greysuitcase in Food, South Korea, Seoul

Perfectly. Cooked. Lamb. That's the thing I remembered the most about this place. La Lune Violette (라 룬 비올렛) is a French bistro located around Hongdae (홍대) station with great food menu and wine selections. Went there for dinner with a friend of mine to do some catching up. We ordered their Sous-vide Pork Belly with Bacon Wrapped Asparagus (수비드 꼬숑), Apple Chips Salad (사과칩 샐러드), and Sous-vide Lamb Shoulder Rack (수비드 램) to share. The Apple Chips Salad was a nice refreshing opener to the meal. The crispy apple chips were really delicious and gave a nice balance to the dish. On to the main courses, the pork belly was cooked perfectly, with crispy skin on top of each pieces. Although the overall dish tasted a little heavy, it was still good. My favorite dish was the lamb dish. Perfectly cooked, a little crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and seasoned just right. The only thing that was lacking is the portion :p (was still craving for more lamb at the end of our meal). Overall, I would recommend this place to anybody who want to try some good French food with a fairly affordable price. Although the menu portion is a little small, I guess that just means that you'll still have some room for desserts afterwards :)

Hope everybody have a good weekend ahead! :)

Namhae (남해) Road Trip Series: Boriam Temple in Geumsan Mountain (금산 보리암), South Korea.

Boriam Temple

October 06, 2015 by greysuitcase in South Korea, Travel

The last destination of our Namhae (남해) road trip was Boriam Temple in Geumsan Mountain (금산 보리암). The temple is located at the top of Geumsan Mountain so there was a little bit of hiking (and a short bus ride) involved for us to get there. The mountain is surrounded by small islands that spread across the Namhae sea which make the view from the top really beautiful. It's no mystery as to why there were lots of locals presence in this place. Most of them are older people with their full hiking attire, but I swear, I think they like come here everyday or something cos all of them looked like they're walking up the hiking trail like it was nothing and they all walked faster than me (shame on me, I know).

Ken, Noah and Hannah decided to do a little bit more hiking to the higher part of the mountain. But since we got there pretty late in the afternoon plus it looked like it's gonna rain soon, I opted to wait for them in the temple area since I was the slowest amongst all of us and didn't want to hold the group back. And I thought it'd be cool if I could get a shot of them from this side of the mountain. They made their way up in no time and back to the temple right when the rain started to fall and a couple of minutes before closing time.

Although we left the park right when the park was closed, we did miss the last bus down the mountain and had to call for a cab. But then, when we were waiting around under the drizzling rain for our taxi in the parking lot, a nice lady saw us and offered a ride down the mountain in her husband's car. We gladly took her offer, cancelled our cab, and four of us squished at the back of their sedan. And luckily we did, cos 5 minutes after we got in, the rain started to pour heavily. The husband was really nice too. He made conversations and asked us questions on our short ride down. We said our thank you when they dropped us off right at our car and scrambling to get into the car to avoid getting drenched by the rain. And with that, our adventure at Namhae came to an end.

p.s: to the nice ahjumma and ahjussi who gave us a lift down the mountain, 감사합니다! :)

Special thanks to Noah who drove us around during the whole road trip, to Ken who introduced us to all these places, and to Hannah who has been a great company (and always made sure that I'm okay :P) during this two-day trip. This will forever be my favorite road trip in South Korea :) (until our next epic one at least :P)
