Beyond The Dough Pizzeria

Beyond the Dough Pizzeria
August 15, 2024 by greysuitcase in Food, Singapore

Beyond the Dough is a small pizzeria in Singapore that specializes in Tokyo-Neapolitan style pizzas. Opened earlier this year in March, the pizzeria has a pretty unassuming facade with a clean, simple, humble interior. The open kitchen concept design gives you a glimpse to Eddie Murakami, the master pizzaiolo who trained at two of the world-renowned best pizzerias in Tokyo—Pizza Strada and Pizza Studio Tamaki—, who often found behind the counter busy making pizzas to order.

What so special about Beyond the Dough’s pizza is the fact that they use high-quality imported ingredients, special proofing techniques for the dough and the use of wood fire oven to fire their pizza. For the pizza dough, they use imported Japanese flour with 30-hour proofing time. They also use Okinawan salt, olive oil from Italy, Japanese water filter for their water and even imported Japanese wood for their fire oven pizza.

I actually found out about this place because a friend who’s living in Singapore told me about it. She said this place went viral on Tiktok and told me to go and see if the food is as good as the hype. She also told me that getting a reservation at this place is really hard. Like you have to reserve 2-3 months in advance hard. But it just so happened that when I walked by this place on a Friday during lunch hour, they have empty tables available so I went in with three of my friends.

Assortment of 3 kinds Appetizers (おまかせ前菜3種盛り合わせ) S$18 | 7/10

Omakase Style

Started the meal with this dish. First, the left one one the plate is the celery, olives, and octopus with pink peppercorns. Not a big fan of celery in general but the olives and octopus were pretty good. The octopus was cooked nicely, tender and not tough at all. The middle top one is broccoli vinaigrette with shredded cheese. The broccoli was cooked and seasoned nicely. A pretty straightforward dish. And lastly, the right one on the plate is tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplant in red sauce and shredded cheese. This was my favorite out of the three on the plate. The vegetables were nicely cooked and it’s really flavorful.

Everyone’s Favorites French Fries (フライドポテト) S$8 | 9.5/10

Anchovy Garlic Flavors

This French fries was the BOMB. Very crispy with great anchovy garlic seasoning. Wasn’t expecting much when ordering the fries but turned out, this was one of the highlight of my meal. Would definitely order this again if I go back.

Burrata with Tomato (ブラータチーズとトマトのサラダ) S$22 | 8/10

Fresh Italian Burrata, Fresh Tomato, Balsamic Sauce

The burrata was delicious with nice silk, creamy texture. Overall the dish is nicely seasoned and very fresh.

Home Made Mini Bucket Lasagna (ミニラザニア) S$12 | 8.5/10

*Limited to 1 portion per customer only

Even though the portion is small, this Mini Bucket Lasagna is packed with big flavors. The combination of layered al dente pasta, creamy tomato sauce, minced beef and cheese gave a comforting spoonful of flavors when I tasted it. The size is kind of perfect if you want to have lasagna without having to order a big portion of it.

Buffalo Margherita (水牛マルゲリータ) S$35 | 9/10

Tomato Sauce, Basil, Buffalo Mozzarella

This pizza was super good. Easily one of the best pizza I’ve ever had in recent times. It has crispy thin (but not too thin) crust with chewy texture on the rest of the slice. The sauce was flavorful with the hint of smokiness from the wood fire oven. The highlight of this dish was the runny tomato sauce covering the slice. It was so good.

Singapore Rampage (シンガポールランページ) S$39 | 7/10

The Sauce is Made From 100 Prawn Simmered for 20 Hours

Ordered the Singapore Rampage since it’s one of their recommended menu and the description of the sauce does sound intriguing. Taste wise, it definitely reminded me of Singaporean food flavor profiles. The flavor of the prawn sauce is pretty bold but it’s a bit fishy and salty for my taste. The flavor of the whole pizza is interesting and definitely something that’s out of the box.

During my meal, the service was pretty good. I found that the table was a bit small though for the amount of food that we ordered so it was a bit cramped when all the food is out. Is the place worth the hype? I don’t know how hyped up this place is on Tiktok but I think I can see why it’s hyped. The pizza is definitely great and I can see myself going back for their pizza (and their fries too actually). Worth noting, the pizza price is a bit on the steeper side and there’s a S$3 charge for water if you don’t order any drinks (if you do, I think the water is complimentary). I think their pizza is definitely worth a try if you don’t have to fight too hard for an empty spot at this place.

Greysuitcase Singapore Restaurant Series: Grilled Limbo Fish with Fresh Green Pepper, TANYU Bugis Junction (探鱼烤鱼), Bugis, Singapore.

TANYU Bugis Junction • 探鱼烤鱼

TANYU Bugis Junction
April 01, 2024 by greysuitcase in Food, Singapore

Tan Yu (探鱼烤鱼) is a Chinese restaurant that is well-known for their popular menu, grilled fish that can be cooked according to your liking from the 12 kinds of flavors they let you choose from. Originated from China, Tan Yu opened their first overseas flagship store in Singapore in December 2017 and has now expanded to 4 other locations in the city. Although their grilled fish is their most popular menu, Tan Yu also serves a variety of other menus that are both spicy and non-spicy.

During my recent trip to Singapore, my Singaporean friends took me to Tanyu, which is apparently one of the restaurant they often frequent.

We arrived at Tanyu Bugis Junction around 6:40 pm and immediately got seated at one of the booth by the staff. Since I never been to this place, I told my friend to just order whatever she thinks is good. And so her recommendation was the Grilled Limbo Fish with Fresh Green Pepper (S$48.9), with the addition of Golden Combination (S$14.8) (which consists of golden mushrooms, potato, lotus root, and luncheon meat), long cabbage and rice.

The food came out pretty quickly after we placed our order. First, came a plate of snacks that consisted of a mix of 9 different types of crackers and peanuts. Then came the Jumbo Lemon and Lime Drink (S$18.9) that we ordered to share. And when they said jumbo, they weren’t kidding because the drink literally came out in a jumbo glass goblet looking container with a tap on it (I forgot to take a picture of this drink but see the size of this drink on the vlog).

Not long after that, the fish came out with the add-ons we ordered. The limbo fish is topped with fresh green pepper and the Golden Combination was actually already placed under the fish, simmering in the dark brown broth.

After adding in the long cabbage and let the fish simmer for about 5 minutes, we took out the fresh green pepper out of the pot so that the soup is not too spicy since I can’t really eat spicy food.

Prior coming to this place, I wasn’t expecting a lot since, one, this place is gaining popularity amongst Indonesians lately and usually hyped-up places on social media don’t live up to their hype. And two, I’m quite picky with fish dishes so I have my reservations prior coming to this place. But my friend told me their fish is fresh so I’m more open to trying it out. Having said that, I can say that I’m pleasantly surprised that this is one of those few places that live up to its hype.

The broth was delicious. It’s thick with flavors, savory and you get that numb mala hit at the end of every slurp (and it just got better as the soup simmered). The fish was fresh and the meat was buttery soft. For me personally, since I can’t handle spicy food and despite the fact that we only left the green pepper simmered for 5 minutes, this dish was pretty spicy. But it was still bearable since I ate it after cooling it down on a separate bowl and with rice. Also, the drink that we ordered tasted even better after eating the spicy fish. The portion was pretty big and I’d say it’s probably enough to share between 4 people (there were 3 of us and we definitely didn’t finish the whole thing) or maybe even 5 people if you order more add-ons.

If you’re a fan of mala or spicy food, would definitely recommend this place to try. My friends told me some locations are busier than others, so you might have to line up for a table if you come during lunch or dinner rush. A line was formed shortly after we took our seat at this location and we went there on a Thursday night. Also, might be better to bring a friend or two if you want to try their grilled fish since the portion is quite big.

Greysuitcase Travel Diary: Supertree Grove, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

Supertree Grove Illuminated

Gardens By the Bay
May 31, 2016 by greysuitcase in Travel, Singapore

Prior to my trip to Singapore, a couple of my friends told me that I should go visit the Supertree Grove at night, when the lights on the trees are on. They said it's cool to see it during nighttime cos it's totally different from daytime. And they were right. I'm glad I decided to go back to this place after my first visit and got to see the Garden Rhapsody (that's what they call it on the website). When the music started playing and the lights all turned on, the place really turned into a mythical enchanted forest. If you have a chance to check out the Supertree Grove at night, I'd tell you the same things my friends told me, you should go check it out. Definitely worth the visit.

On a totally unrelated topic, the pictures on this post were all taken with my Sony A6000 and I have to say, I'm very impressed with the quality of the night shots, or at least the shots on this post. They turned out better than I expected them to be.

And with this, I'm wrapping up my Gardens By the Bay Series posts.

Greysuitcase Singapore Travel Diary: Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

Flower Dome

Flower Dome
May 25, 2016 by greysuitcase in Singapore, Travel

Flower Dome at Gardens By the Bay was the last location we went to for our mini photowalk. The first thing that I felt when walking into the dome was the cool blowing air from the air-con, almost too cold for me I think, especially with the gloomy weather outside. The Flower Dome is the largest greenhouse in the world and is housed by another cool structure, just like the other architecture in the Gardens. We saw different kind of plants and flowers in this place, but to be honest, I'm not a flower kinda person, so I didn't take a lot of pictures of the flowers. The architecture was pretty great tho. Lots of curves, glass, and natural lights. Very interesting structure indeed.

One cool thing that I experienced during our walk in this place was seeing the raindrops falling on the glass above us, as it started raining 10 minutes after we walked in. It almost felt like I'm in the rain without having to get wet :P Such a great experience. Anyway, we ended up sitting down for a while in the dome, watching the rain, and talked for a bit. One of the thing I enjoy the most when meeting other Instagrammers is this, getting to know them outside those pictures they posted on their gallery. We talked about how they first met, their experiences with the Singapore's Instagram community, school life, work life, and a bunch of other things. It still amazes me how much I can relate to and connect with the people who I met through Instagram.

We decided to leave the and headed back to the MRT station after we finished walking around the entire Dome. It's still raining a little bit outside and none of us had a umbrella, so we ended up running back to the MRT trying not to get wet as much as possible. A memorable way to end the meet I should say ;)

ps: Thank you again to Venus & Jessica for such a warm hospitality during our two meets when I was in Singapore. You guys definitely made my Singapore trip more exciting and memorable :)

Greysuitcase Singapore Travel Diary: Cloud Forest, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

Cloud Forest

Cloud Forest
March 28, 2016 by greysuitcase in Singapore, Travel

One of the best places to visit when you are in Singapore is probably this magnificent Cloud Forest at the Gardens by the Bay. After walking around outside in the 30-something degrees celsius weather (see my previous post exploring the Supertree Grove), walking into this cool-moist conservatory gave us such as nice feeling. We were immediately greeted by the mist of the world's tallest indoor waterfall as soon as we walked in. The view was amazing and it just got better from there. The whole place is like a playground for adults (and photographers I should say). Everywhere you turn, you got a new view of the forest and it's so interesting to see the steel dome as the background to the luscious green plants. You can get lots of interesting angles to shoot on around this place. I went in when the weather was sunny. Sunlight hitting the leaves and there were shadow plays everywhere. But not long after, it changed into a cloudy gloomy weather, just right in time for the mist timing that happens six times a day. The place changed into something else when it's full of mists.

Anyways, this was my first time meeting other instagrammers in Singapore and actually shoot together with them. I had a lot of fun with Venus and Jessica and was really fascinated to see how they see and frame their shots. We took our time and just wandered around the dome for a good two hours or so before moving on to our next location, which I'll share on my next post on this Singapore series. Stay tuned! :)

Wishing everybody a great week ahead!
