Fritz Coffee Company Anguk • 프릳츠 원서점

Opened in 2015 by Park Geunha and five of his friends, Fritz Coffee Company (프릳츠) has became one of South Korea’s famous specialty coffee brand that is well known for its wide variety of house roasts. The iconic seal holding a cup of coffee brand even has a growing international following these days since a lot of coffee drinkers are fond of Fritz’s house roasts. Apart from a good cup of coffee, you can also enjoy a wide range of delicious French and Korean baked goods that are available at the cafe.

This is actually their second location in Seoul that I’ve visited after their main branch in Dohwa-dong (프릳츠 도화점) and I have to say after finding out about this location, I frequent this location a lot more than the other one just because of their convenient location that’s close to Anguk Station (안국역).

Just like their main branch, the mix of old and new concept is carried over to this location as well. The main area where the pastries are displayed and where you place your order is located inside a more modern building opposite the Arario Museum in Space Theater (아라리오뮤지엄 인 스페이스), while the seating area is mostly inside the small hanok structure building as well as the outdoor seating in the yard area.

If you find yourself looking for a caffeine fix or perhaps a good pastry when you’re visiting Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을), Samcheongdong neighborhood (삼청동), or even the Arario Museum in Space Theater (아라리오뮤지엄 인 스페이스), I would definitely recommend this place.

12 months • 열두달

Eating at 12 months (열두달) is like eating in a mini cafeteria. The hanok restaurant that’s located at Ikseon-dong (익선동) actually housed 6 different brands that have different menus that focus on different things ranging from meat, pasta, vegetables to drinks. It’s actually a great concept for a group of people who might have different cravings but still want to eat together because you can just select from the different concept menus that they have.

The interior of the place is also very homey. Maybe because the original structure of the hanok is kept so I felt like stepping into someone’s house. I also like how they have different sections of seatings, from the middle area that’s lit by the natural lighting from the glass ceiling above to the more private seatings that are divided by shelves and walls.

The first time I went to 12 months (열두달) was when it was just opened. There’s always a line in front of the place on the weekends so I decided to go during odd hours on a weekday to avoid the queue. Sure enough, the place was not too busy when I got there. There were still people eating, but at least I don’t have to wait in line. After looking through their menu, I ended up ordering ROOT’s creamy mushroom pasta and it was delicious. The portion was pretty big, the sauce was the right amount of creamy with earthy flavors and it was topped with generous serving of sliced mushrooms. I’ve been back a couple of times since then with my friends and they all seemed to like the food there. Unfortunately, I think the place just closed recently and has been replaced by another store because I can no longer find it on the map.

My first visit to the Presh (프레쉬) showroom was a memorable one. First of all, I was not expecting to find the store in the middle of Seoul’s quiet residential area. The store was on the second floor and surrounded by what I believe were apartments building with no other commercial stores in sight. When we entered the space, we were greeted by neatly organized shelves, racks, and tables displaying their well-designed products.

If you like to browse around design or knick knack shops around Seoul, you probably have seen their products at some point. It’s kind of hard to miss those silver tin containers with colorful labels wrapped around them. Presh sells a variety of products including candles (which is their product that I most often see in other shops), t-shirts, aprons, tote bags, pouch, and phone cases. Each of them are stored in silver tin containers which I thought was pretty cool. Presh has two types of containers, one that has a detachable top lid and the other one is the tin can version where the top lid open like those food tin cans. I thought that’s a pretty neat idea for a packaging.

Second of all, not only did I meet the owner (maybe one of the owners, not sure how many people own this brand) but I also met the graphic designer who was responsible for all the graphics and packaging for Presh. They were very nice and welcoming. They showed us around the store while explaining their products here and there and answered all the questions that I have for them. I always like chatting with the store owners and get to know their products more. It makes the whole shopping experience more fun and I got to find out interesting tidbits about the brand that I wouldn’t have known otherwise. In this instance, one of the thing that made it more fun was because the graphic designer speaks English so sometimes when I don’t understand something in Korean, she translated it for me immediately.

Anyway, my cousin and I ended up buying a couple of candles (they have great selection of scents) and an apron to gift to our friend and they gave us free soap samples and stickers for our purchase. If you’re looking for candles or gift ideas, I definitely recommend to check out their brand.

Anthracite Seogyo • 앤트러사이트 서교점

Anthracite (앤트러사이트) is one of the more well known coffee brand in Korea that serves great coffee in their always well designed coffee shops. I think my first visit to Anthracite was about five or six years ago. Not to this branch though, but to their Hannam branch. Friends who visited Anthracite told me good things about their coffee so since then, Anthracite (앤트러사이트) has been on my radar and I’ve tried to visit their different branches around Seoul, mainly to see the interior of their coffee shops of course, since I don’t drink coffee.

Anthracite Seogyo (앤트러사이트 서교점) is one of their branches that has a very charming, interesting interior. The cafe occupied an old spacious three story mansion in Mangwon-dong (망원동) that could well be someone’s house in the past. When you arrived in front of the building, you’ll be greeted by concrete steps that will take you to the garden area in front of the mansion that is covered with rocks and trees.

The mansion itself is decorated with wooden furnitures combined with gold, silver, and copper accent here and there that added some contrast to the more organic feel of the wood and exposed bricks combination that they have going on on all three floors of the cafe. The tables and chairs are set up with plenty of space in between so you have room to move around the cafe more freely. It also has floor-to-ceiling windows on all three floors that are over looking the garden and balcony access if you choose to sit outside to enjoy the view.

Gray Gristmill • 그레이 그리스트밀

I visited Gray Gristmill (그레이 그리스트밀) last year a month after it just opened in June. The shots of Gray Gristmill’s exterior made a frequent appearances on my Instagram explore feed at the time, mainly of people taking OOTD shots in front of it. I mean, I can totally see why it became popular real fast because the exterior of the cafe is quite unique. After seeing the images of the place quite often on Instagram, I decided to check this new addition to the trendy cafes in Garosugil (가로수길).

To be honest, I was worried as soon as I stepped in front of the counter to order. Their menu only listed coffee options and I didn’t see any non-coffee options available. Before I had the chance to ask the barista behind the counter who was waiting for me to tell him my order if they have non-coffee menu, he asked if it’s my first time here. Clearly I looked like I don’t know what I’m doing so I nodded and said yes. He then proceeded to explain how the ordering process goes at this cafe. First, you pick your beans—single origin or blended—and then you choose the beverage type—Americano, Brewing, Latte, or Affogato. The price of the single portion vacuum sealed beans and the beverage type will then be added as the total price of your drink. So it’s almost like you customized your own coffee order kinda thing.

For coffee drinkers who know their coffee beans, this might be a great thing. I totally get it. But for me who are not a coffee drinker, all this was just a little bit too complicated. So I quickly asked him if they have non-coffee options. He pointed me to the other side of the counter where non-coffee options were displayed on different bottles buried between ice cubes. To my relief, I instantly recognized all the labels displayed on top of each bottles indicating what they are. Avoiding the complicated ordering process, I quickly picked up one of the bottle and paid.

A year later, the coffee shop is still there and seemed to have become a popular destination for cafe goers in Garosugil. I assume their coffee must be pretty good, which is not at all surprising since the baristas who work there have won numbers of barista championships in the past. If you want to read more about this place, I found this article that might interest you. I have a feeling this cafe is probably going to be around for a while, so if you are in Garosugil area and looking for a good coffee spot, you might wanna try this place.
