Canada Fall '24 - Ep. 01 - Spilling My Food on the Plane

Soekarno Hatta International Airport
November 03, 2024 by greysuitcase in Toronto, Canada, Travel Series, Travel Vlog

Six Babies on the 13-Hour Flight

“Is there a problem with my reservation?” I asked the check-in agents behind the counter who seemed to be trying to solve an issue on the screen in front of them. One of them was still holding my passport in her hand while the other was hovering above her murmuring instructions. Both of them looked up to me and gave me a slightly nervous smile, making me start to worry that there really was a problem with my reservation.

15 minutes ago, I arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for my flight to Toronto. Despite arriving right in the middle of the airport porter’s shift change which resulted in not one porter was in sight at the departure drop-off area, I was lucky enough to met one porter who’s just about to load his customer’s luggages to their car. This service is actually one of the thing I’m grateful for at our airport. For IDR 75,000 (≈$4.85), I got the convenience of not having to carry my two 23 kg suitcases, one carry-on and backpack. Pretty helpful especially if you’re not that strong and have a back problem like me.

When I was inside the departure terminal, I immediately went to the ‘Morning Calm’ lane at the Korean Air counter. There was one person in front of me who was immediately called to one of the open counters for the airline’s frequent flyer members. I’ve been flying Korean Air the last couple of years and their service is usually pretty quick. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any long lines before and today was no different. Another counter opened up quickly after the last one and my porter immediately pushed the cart with me towing behind.

While he was loading my suitcases to the baggage belt, I handed my passport to the check-in agent who then reconfirmed my details and destination after she pulled up my reservation on the screen in front of her. We had a bit of a small talk while she’s still processing my check-in and everything seemed to be going normal. But then, I noticed that it took longer than usual for me to receive my passport back and my boarding pass. Shortly after, the agent called out for her supervisor who came over and looked at the screen with her. And now here we are, with me trying to find out what seemed to be the reason for the delay.

The agent who has my passport spoke up, “Well, for your second leg of the flight from Seoul to Toronto, it seems like there’s going to be a baby sitting next to you. So now we’re trying to find you another seat that is away from the baby since it might be uncomfortable to be sitting next to a baby.”

Not gonna lie, my heart dropped a little at the new information I just heard. The flight from Seoul to Toronto is about 13 hours and 20 minutes long. And of course my overthinking mind went straight to imagining the worst-case scenario: the potential of having to sit next to a crying baby for the duration of the flight. That’s not good. Not good at all. Even so, I tried to think of the best-case scenario as well, which is sitting next to a very calm baby which wouldn’t be a problem at all.

“Oh no! That’s not good,” I said light-heartedly voicing out my concern with a laugh. “How many babies are there on the flight?”

“There are actually six babies on the flight,” the agent responded.

My eyebrows shot up immediately, surprised that there were so many babies flying from Seoul to Toronto. And it’s not even holiday season. Or at least that I knew of.

“In that case, please do continue with your search. It’d be awesome if I can get seated away from the baby.” I replied with a grin, hoping that there’s available seat somewhere else for me.

“That is what we’re trying to do. But it seems like the open seat options are all at the back of the plane. Would you want us to move your seat to the back?” She asked.

Now there’s a new dilemma: sitting in front of the plane next to a baby or sitting in the back of the plane not next to a baby. One additional factor that I took into consideration was I did pay extra for the seat that I’m currently in. And when I asked the agent if I can get refunded for the fee if I move to the back of the plane, they couldn’t say for sure.

So in the end, since I feel like I already paid anyway and didn’t want to go through the hassle of getting a refund or waste the paid seat, I decided, “That’s fine then. I’ll just stay at my current seat and pray that the baby next to me is super calm and behaved.”

The two gate agents smiled at me and the one holding my passport said, “We sure do hope so. We’ve also made a note on your reservation saying that if there’s a seat open at the front of the plane, you’d like to be moved to that seat. So when you get to Incheon, you can check with the gate agent there and see if they can help you out.”

I nodded and threw them a grateful smile, “Thank you. I’ll do that. And thank you for informing me. I really appreciate the effort to get me a new seat.”

They really didn’t have to inform me or go that extra mile trying to find me a seat. But they did and I really did appreciate that. One of that small things that matters you know. I have to say that I’m (once again) impressed with the service at Korean Air.

After that conversation, the gate agent finally handed me back my passport and two boarding passes with my luggage tags stuck behind one of them while informing me the boarding gate and time. I thanked her before walking away from the counter and silently worrying and wondering what kind of baby I’d sit next to tomorrow morning.

The Walk to the Gate

40 minutes before the boarding time, I made it pass immigration and inside the departure area. And as usual, I was greeted with warm air around inside Soekarno-Hatta Terminal 3. I think most of you who’ve been to this airport probably agree on how the air-cons need to be improved, given that the temperature inside this airport has never been cool. Although since it’s night time now, at least it’s not as hot as it is during day time. Also, I don’t know if this was new or they’ve always been there before and I just failed to noticed them but the bright, bright lamps they use around the airport really didn’t help with the temperature. They’re emitting more hot air inside the airport, practically cancelling out the cool breeze from the air-con. But hey, at least there are air-cons. Better than nothing right?

While walking to my gate, I did find the gate change surprising this time around. Having been flying to Seoul countless of times from this airport, my flights to Seoul with Korean Air usually departed from one of the gates that are near the escalators down from immigration. Gate 9 or Gate 8 were the ones I usually departed from which both are only a short walk from the escalator. But this time, Gate 5 was written on my boarding pass which is pretty far down from the main entrance of the departure area.

The 10-minutes long relaxing walk to Gate 5 was probably my longest walk in this terminal ever. The area around the gate felt less busy and the air-cons were actually cooler than the ones on the previous gates. Also, I found out from one of my cousins that mid-term break was the following week and some families might’ve started their holiday early this week, thus why the airport was busier than usual. I guess that made sense seeing how there were a good number of traveling families around the airport.

First Leg: Jakarta (CGK) to Incheon (ICN)

The boarding process started around 9:10 pm with all the priority passengers boarding first and then followed by Zone 1 which was my boarding group. I made it to my seat exactly 13 minutes later and found out after the plane doors were closed that the middle seat next to me was empty. Yeay! It’s one of those little wins in life that brings me joy, you know. So I buckled up and ready to kick-off the first leg of my trip, a 7-hours flight to Incheon, South Korea.

KE628 In-Flight Meal

45 minutes after take off, the meal service started. Thanks to Korean Air app recent new feature (definitely recommend to download the app if you travel with Korean Air because they actually put up useful information for you flight including check-in counters locations at airports, meal service option, baggage tracking, etc), I actually was able to find out about the meal options before the flight, which was really nice too because it helped eliminate the stress of not being able to hear what the flight attendant is saying when they recite the menu options.

For this flight, the choice is between Bibimbap for the Korean option and Roasted Chicken Breast with Rosemary Sauce for the Western option. I chose the Bibimbap because I haven’t had it for a while and my favorite thing about this meal is that they come with Korean rice and seaweed soup. This time, it was also served with pickled onion and custard cake (I think) for the dessert.

Greysuitcase Travel Series - Canada Fall ‘24 - First Leg: CGK to ICN - Korean Air In-Flight Meal Bibimbap.

The Flying Bibimbap Bowl

I was pretty excited for the meal and grabbed the instant rice to open the plastic cover on top of it. If you’ve ever had one this instant rice, you know that the plastic cover is a bit snug and it takes a little bit of force to pull it from the container. I was doing exactly that and when I have pulled the cover halfway with my right hand, it suddenly just tore off from the bottom part resulting in me accidentally knocking off my Bibimbap bowl. The bowl containing the vegetables literally flew from my tray and landed upside down on the carpet in the middle of the aisle, essentially making it inedible.

I was pretty mortified but other than the quick glance the lady sitting across the aisle from me gave to the upside down bowl on the floor before she went back to her movie, I don’t think nobody around me actually noticed, sparing me from my embarrassment. I quickly grabbed the top plastic cover of the bowl and used it as a scooper to scooped the vegetables back into the bowl. For good measure, I also used my napkin to pick up the small remnants of the veggies that were still on the carpet. Minutes later to my relief, the carpet looked as good as nothing was spilled on it. And so no Bibimbap for me on this flight. But at least the rice and seaweed soup were safe and I ended up eating those. Also, good thing I already had dinner with my parents earlier before the flight so I wasn’t that hungry.

Movie Night During Red-Eye Flight

Sleeping has always been hard to do for me during red-eye flights. This time was no different. I ended up staying up for the full duration of the flight, listening to music, playing games on my phone and managed to watch two movies.

The first one was Citizen of a Kind (시민덕희) starring Ra Mi-Ran, Yum Hye-Ran, and Jang Yoon-Ju, faces that have been appearing on recent K-dramas. The movie is based on a true story that happened in 2016 where a housewife in her 40’s became a victim of a Korean voice phishing group based in China. She chased after the group’s leader to get her revenge after the guy who scammed her volunteered to give her tips about the organization as his attempt to get out of the organization he was forced into.

I thought the movie was quite funny and entertaining with an interesting insight into how voice phishing organizations work. It managed to bring hope and light-heartedness to a pretty serious crime that happens often these days, especially to the older generation. My rating: 8/10.

Greysuitcase Travel Series - Canada Fall ‘24 - First Leg: CGK to ICN.

The second movie I watched was Troll Factory (댓글부대). Based on true events and witness accounts, Troll Factory explores how the media and social media outlets manipulate and drive public opinion about real news as well as fake news.

This one started pretty slow, but once I got passed the first 15 minutes, it got really interesting. Even though fake news issue is nothing new, this movie gives you a glimpse into how a trend, narrative and manufactured-fact are created on traditional media and social media. Very interesting subject matter that left me wondering even more about validity and bias of what I see on online. My rating: 9/10.

2 movies later at 3 am Jakarta time and 5.5 hours into the flight, I’m still awake.

Hours later, we touched down in Seoul at 6:21 am local time. Landed 44 minutes early than the scheduled time of arrival which is pretty normal with Korean Air from my experiences. All and all, the flight to Seoul was pretty normal and relatively peaceful.

Seoul Winter '17 - Ep. 01 - Gukbap Dinner with Soo Zee & Leigh

January 09, 2023 by greysuitcase in Seoul, South Korea, Travel Series, Vertical Vlog, Vlog Series

In 2017, I decided to close my year in my favorite city. And so, on the last week of December, I arrived at Incheon International Airport on a cold clear winter morning and took the airport bus to the city. This was my fifth trip to Seoul this year and by now, the city almost feels like (a second) home to me.

First stop of the day was the hotel. Opted to stay at LOTTE City Hotel Guro (롯데시티호텔 구로) since I’ve had a pretty packed year of traveling and wanted to stay somewhere comfortable and familiar, especially during Seoul’s cold winter. Plus I’ve stayed here before and had a wonderful time during my previous visits so I came back again this time around.

The check-in process was a breeze. I was assisted by the same person who checked me in on my previous trip and she remembered me. That’s always a plus on my book. Since I arrived way earlier than the check-in time, I left my luggages with the receptionist and went to get some food.

Right next to the hotel is Guro G-Valley Plaza (구로G밸리비즈플라자), a medium sized shopping center with various tenants from restaurants, cafes, convenient stores and even doctor’s clinics and pharmacies. My first meal every time I’m back in Seoul is usually soup and rice. It’s a comfort food for me, especially after a red-eye flight with restless sleep on the plane. Something warm and hearty always made me feel better after. Plus it’s perfect with the cold weather outside.

I went to Han Chon Seolleongtang (한촌설렁탕 구로지밸리몰점) at Guro G-Valley Plaza to get exactly that. I ordered their Seolleongtang (설렁탕) set which comes with white rice and three banchans. It’s a simple warm meal but after finishing the whole bowl of thinly slice beef and milky broth, I felt a little more alive than I was before.

After lunch, I still have some time to kill so I went to Läderach (레더라) to get some dessert. Läderach is a Swiss chocolate and confectionary manufacturer and they have a couple of cafes open in Seoul. Soo Zee was the one who actually introduced me to the place. She took me here on one of our hangout session last spring because she likes their chocolate and after I tried it, I agree with her. I ordered their Swiss Classic Milk (스위스클래식 밀크) and sat there reading while waiting for my check-in time.

An hour or so later, I finally checked into my room. The room is spacious and clean, just like how I remembered it from my previous trips. The only difference this time was that they gave me complimentary wine and chocolate for my stay, which was a nice touch. I also requested for a microwave to be put in my room and they also accommodated my request which I really appreciate.

Greysuitcase Travel Series - Seoul Winter '17 - LOTTE City Hotel Guro (롯데시티호텔 구로) , Seoul (서울), South Korea.

After I freshened up and rested for a bit, I headed out again in the late afternoon to meet up with Soo Zee and Leigh for dinner. Soo Zee and Leigh are also fans of gukbap (hot soup with rice) (국밥) and so when they suggested getting gukbap for dinner, (even though I just had rice and soup earlier today) I immediately agreed to it.

They took me to Ban Ryong San (반룡산), a popular gukbap restaurant near Seolleung station (선릉역). The name of the place is actually inspired by the name of a mountain near Hamheung, a city in North Korea, which is the hometown of the mother of the owner of the restaurant. The place wasn’t too big but it was pretty packed when we were there. There were quite a number of ahjussis eating at the place too which is always a good sign (it usually means the food is good if it’s popular among the older crowd).

We ordered their Garit Gukbap (가릿국밥), which apparently is a Hamheung specialty, and Wang Mandu (왕만두). Their Wang Mandu was, as the name suggest, huge and flavorful. Their Garit Gukbap comes with white rice that’s already put inside the soup, long shredded beef, white tofu, congealed ox blood, thinly-sliced egg crepe, and green onions. The broth is made from beef ribs and brisket. It’s the kind of broth that’s really flavorful and you don’t have to add anything into it to enjoy the dish. We really liked it and finished the whole thing until there’s no soup left in our bowls.

Greysuitcase Travel Series - Seoul Winter '17 - Soo Zee & Leigh , Seoul (서울), South Korea.

After dinner, we headed back together since we’re all going to the same direction. Even though we finished dinner quite late and rush hour suppose to have passed by now, we found ourselves (or maybe it was just me) getting squished in between people who was going back home the same time we did on the subway. Leigh didn’t really have a problem standing her ground since she was still leisurely holding her monitor while taking a call (talking about multitasking at its best) and so did Soo Zee. I was okay the first couple of stops but then more people came into the car and I was slowly getting squished by the people standing around me. At some point Soo Zee took a picture of me in my squished state because she found it funny (I do too after I saw the picture).

And that’s pretty much concluded my first day back in Seoul.

Seoul Spring '17 - Ep. 15 - Went for a ₩5,000 Korean Meal

May 09, 2022 by greysuitcase in Seoul, South Korea, Travel Series, Vlog, Vlog Series

Mar had a workshop today and it basically took the entire first half of our day. When we came back from the workshop, it was during mid-afternoon and we both were pretty spent. She was tired from learning all the new stuff from the workshop and I was tired from translating the stuff she was learning during the workshop. So, we decided to have a break/nap time before going out again for dinner.

After Mar woke up from her nap, we went out to look around the restaurants around the neighborhood. We weren’t really sure what we want to have for dinner to be honest but when we passed by this one restaurant that has meals with rice, soup and banchan (백반) on their menu, we wanted to try it. Well, I’m always down for eating rice and soup and Mar wanted to try it mainly because of the cheap price of the meal. I mean, getting all the things pictured on the banner in front of the restaurant for just ₩5,000 (≈$4) per person is a pretty good deal.

So we went in and was eager to order and eat (especially since we haven’t had any proper lunch yet and it was like 5 pm in the afternoon, so we’re pretty hungry). But then when we went in, nobody was there. The lights and TV were on and everything but not one person was in sight. We even waited for 5 minutes or so hoping that the owner or the server of the restaurant would appear but nobody showed up. So after a while, we left and decided to look for another place to eat.

Mar was suggesting that we should go get Naengmyeon (냉면) near the restaurant we went to with our friends the first day we were here. But neither of us remembered what the restaurant name was and how to get there. After walking around for a while and saw nothing that really interest us, we decided to go back to the first restaurant and try our luck the second time. And what do you know. This time, the owner was inside and we can finally have our meal.

We ordered 2 servings of the sundubu (순두부찌개) and they came with two bowls of rice, two pieces of fried fish and 12 different banchan that you can ask for more if you want seconds. The ahjumma gave us free fried eggs too which was really nice of her. We also got to talk with her for a bit when we were having our meal. She was wondering what are foreigners like us doing in this neighborhood since the area is not exactly a tourist spot. I told her that we’re visiting our friends who live around here and she nodded in understanding at that.

Anyway, for ₩5,000, I’d say this was a pretty good meal. The food tasted like a home-cooked meal for sure and it was really fulfilling. We even ended up walking around for a while after our meal because we were so stuffed before finally going back home.

Seoul Spring '17 - Ep. 14 - Easter Sunday at Garosugil

We had a pretty chill day at Garosugil for Easter Sunday. We went for Sunday service and then decided to just hang out at Basilur, a cafe that sold mainly teas and desserts. It's actually one of my favorite spot in Garosugil because their milk teas and desserts were good. The cafe was also pretty spacious and occupied the second and third floor of a building with big windows that overlook the intersection in front of the Village 11 Factory shop. It's like the perfect spot for afternoon tea while you people watch. (Sadly the place has now closed due to the pandemic.)

After the sun has set, we made our way back to the subway station. We stopped by a kimbap place to buy some to take away for our dinner and then finally headed home.

Seoul Spring '17 - Ep. 13 - Samcheongdong & Birthday Surprise

April 16, 2022 by greysuitcase in Seoul, South Korea, Travel Series, Vertical Vlog, Vlog Series

Travel Vertical Vlog

The first stop of our Samcheongdong (삼청동) exploration the next day was Milkcow In Boots, a bread shop that seemed to be popular at the time. The picture of their bread frequently popped up on my Instagram so we decided to check the place out since we happened to pass it by. There was already a line forming in front of the shop and we joined in to wait for our turn. We bought two of their cube bread and a bottle of milk. They also gave us mini cube bread as freebies which Mar immediately tried and said it was just alright (see the vlog for her reaction). And I have to agree with her. I also think it was just alright after I tried the bread when we got home. Not really worth they hype.

After the bread shop, we walked around the area and stopped by a flower stall and decided to buy a small bouquet of flowers for Eun-gyo’s unnie because it was her birthday. We were planning to surprise her with a cake when she gets home from work so birthday cake was the other thing on the list that we needed to buy. Before that could happen though, we passed by Granhand on our way back to the subway station and with Mar being a fan of all things scent related, we naturally stopped by.

Granhand is probably one of my favorite perfume store. They have a wide selection of nice scents and all their stores and products are well-designed. The branch we visited was Granhand Sogyeok (그랑핸드 소격), a small store in one of Samcheongdong’s alleyways. Mar ended up purchasing a bottle of perfume and got her name stamped on the bottle. It’s a complimentary service that they have for customers who want to customize the label of their newly purchased perfume.

After the perfume shopping is done, we encountered a couple of buskers who were singing on the side of the road. I always feel that the buskers at different neighborhoods in Seoul sing or cover different genres of music. While the performances in Hongdae are more well known for its K-pop influence and the ones in Sinchon tend to be on the pop acoustic ballad side (imho), British rock seemed to be the theme in Samcheongdong judging from the ones we encountered tonight. The first singer we saw was singing Sting’s ‘Shape of My Heart’ and the second singer was singing Coldplay’s ‘In My Place’ and ‘The Scientist’. In a sense, it’s nice because you feel, hear and experience different vibes in every neighborhood.

We finally stopped Paris Croissant (파리크라상) to buy the birthday cake for Eun-gyo unnie’s surprise birthday celebration later that night. We were looking at the cake selections on display while discussing in Indonesian which one we should get for her. Suddenly, from behind the counter somebody said, ‘This cake is pretty popular amongst the customers.’ in Indonesian. Of course both of us were super surprised. Not because we met another fellow Indonesian (there were plenty of Indonesian tourists at the time in Seoul), but because we met a fellow Indonesian who works at a Korean store. Even when I was living in Seoul, I don‘t think I’ve ever met an Indonesian who works at a Korean company.

Following her recommendation, we settled on the Strawberry Crepe (딸기 크레이프). She helped us out with our order and we ended up chatting for a bit before I asked her for her Kakao info, suggesting we should hang out sometimes. We did end up hanging out together during my next trip to Seoul and found out that we actually have mutual friends back home in Jakarta. I also later found out that the story of our first encounter at Paris Croissant somehow ended up circulating amongst her coworkers. But instead of the actual incident, the story evolved to another scenario where a guy customer (I guess my short hair could be the reason for the false assumption) asked for her for her contact info because he’s interested in her. It’s so funny and we had a good laugh about it. Anyway, we ended up becoming friends and I hung out with her every time I’m in town, and we still do until today. And that’s the story how I met my friend Winny. If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’re probably familiar with her face from my instastories.

After we got home, we quickly set up the cake, candles and cameras and get ready to surprise Eun-gyo unnie when she got home. I was constantly checking my Kakao because Deok-chun oppa was going to text me when they’re close by so we can match the timing. Don’t know why, but both of us were ridiculously nervous for no apparent reason when that text came in and they were about to arrive. But anyway, she came home and we immediately sang (slightly off tune) ‘Happy Birthday’ to her when she walked in. Candles were blown, flowers were given, cake was cut and she was thoroughly surprised and didn’t suspect a thing. So the surprise was a success.

Eun-sa unnie later came over and we ordered jjajangmyeong (짜장면) and Nene Chicken (네네치킨) delivery for our super late dinner/supper birthday celebration. And of course we had the birthday cake for desserts afterwards. It was a fun night and Happy Birthday Eun-gyo unnie! :)
